Lab 4 Update
Thursday, February 28, 2008, 10:53 AM
There's been a few questions about lab 4 and the validity of data that y'all acquired. For those of you who are having data issues, I've posted my data online. At the top of your lab reports, please state where you got your data from for your analysis. We prefer that you parse through your own data and you will be rewarded (extra points) if you are able to make your own data work. Please don't expect the numbers to come out perfect but you should see relative trends and numbers that support that trend. Good luck on the lab report.

Also, the last question on the lab report is updated to help you direct you to the answers.

Remember, this lab is all about seperating the effects of absorption and scattering and how scattering can affect the absorption calculation.

Updated versions posted. For those of you in the Tuesday lab, the questions are reorganized to help with your write up.

Lab 3 Nigrosin values
Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 05:45 PM
There was a question in class today about lab 3 regarding the concentrations of nigrosin measured in the handout. As announced during the labs, the nigrosin concentrations measured are what is stated on the cuvettes and not what is in the writeup. That should be 1/6, 1/8, 1/10, 1/12, and 1/14. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey everyone,

Exam
Mean = 67.6/80
Standard deviation = 9.08

As a whole, great job on the exam. Solutions are posted online. If you have any questions about grading, feel free to email me. Although we're not sure, the mean is probably around the B/B+ mark. Remember, you still have approximately 2/3 of your grade left in the remaining homeworks/labs, final exam, and final project. We would say that if you're within 1.5 standard deviations of the mean, you're doing ok. If you have a lower grade than that, you're still probably ok but feel free to discuss options with one of us.

Labs
Mandatory labs this week. Please come at your assigned times.

Final Projects
Guidelines for the project will be posted by tomorrow morning. You'll be working in groups of 3 of your choice so please figure that out. (The 3 grad students will be working together). Each group will select a topic (based on posted journal papers) to present. I will post papers for the projects by Wednesday and will ask you to email me your groups top 3 choices by Friday evening. We'll then assign the topics based off the responses.

Thanks,
Amaan
