Dissecting the neural circuits of high acuity spatial vision

New developments in two-photon microscopy, genetically-encoded functional indicators and virtual reality interfaces are converging to provide an unprecedented view of brain activity at the mesoscale. Now thousands of neurons and tens of thousands of synapses can be imaged simultaneously in awake, behaving mice, yielding new insight into the functional micro-architecture of the brain. In this talk, I will discuss how we are using these new techniques to dissect the circuits responsible for high acuity vision in mice. I will also discuss some of the technical obstacles that these new approaches are exposing, with a particular emphasis on data management and analysis.
