Miniaturized multimodal fiber-optic probes: ex vivo and in vivo

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is routinely used in ophthalmology and increasingly is becoming widely adopted in cardiology and oncology. However, similar to optical microscopy techniques, OCT suffers from a shallow penetration depth and limited image contrast in tissue. Our work has focused on addressing these limitations through the development of miniaturized fiber-optic probes that can be inserted deep into the body. Examples, such as integrated imaging and sensing probes, smart brain biopsy needle, fiber-optic probes based on 3D printing without individual micro-optic components, will be showcased in this talk.
