Neurophotonics: Controlling neurons at nano level in order to modulate of animal behavior
Samarendra Mohanty, Ph.D.

While Photonics technologies are being used for imaging structure and function of neurons at the cellular to animal levels, it has just begun to be used to manipulate, and control neuronal activity and thus remotely modulate animal behavior. I will describe the use of the laser microbeam for in-vitro manipulation of neurons directly and also indirectly by generating microfluidic flow and electric fields. I will also present optogenetic manipulation of neurons at the in-vitro and in-vivo level for potential intervention of neurological disorders.
